You Can Ask AI What to Do With Your Life. Here's What It Can't Tell You.

What should I do with my life?

I don't know who I am anymore.

Maybe you've typed something like this into a chat window late at night. The house is quiet, everyone else is looked after, and you finally have a moment to yourself. So you ask the question you haven't said out loud to anyone.

If that's you, you're far from alone. Research published in the Harvard Business Review in 2025 found that among the most common reasons people now use AI are companionship, organising their lives and finding purpose. More and more of us are asking a machine the questions we used to ask a trusted friend, or kept to ourselves.

The short answer: AI can help you sort your thoughts and ask better questions. But it can't tell you what you truly want, because that answer lives in your own energy, your joy and your inner voice. Learning to hear that voice again is the real work, and it starts with small, daily moments of checking in with yourself.

Why are so many women asking AI what to do with their lives?

Because it feels safe. I understand the appeal completely. AI doesn't judge you. It doesn't need anything back. You don't have to manage its feelings, explain yourself twice, or worry about what it will think of you. You don't have to pay for it.

For those of us who've spent years looking after everyone else, that's a rare kind of space. We've become so practised at reading other people's needs that we've lost the thread of our own. We know what our family wants for dinner, what our clients need, what our friends are going through. Ask us what we want, and the line goes quiet.

I know this silence so well. For a long time I shaped myself around what other people expected of me. I listened to every voice except my own. So when a woman types her biggest question into a chat window, I don't see someone doing something wrong. I see someone reaching for herself.

Can AI help you find your purpose?

Yes, in part. AI can be a useful companion on this journey. It can help you:

  • Put a jumble of thoughts into words, so you can see them more clearly
  • Ask you good questions you might not think to ask yourself
  • Sort through options and spot patterns in what you've told it
  • Keep you company while you think, without rushing you

That's real help. I use these tools myself, and I've built some of my own work around them. But there's an important limit, and it matters most for women like us.

What can't AI tell you about your life?

AI can't tell you what you truly want, because the answer isn't in your words alone. It's in how you feel.

AI can only work with what you give it. And if you've spent years shaping yourself around other people, what you give it may not be you at all. It may be the version of you that keeps everyone comfortable.

Ask it what to do with your life, and you'll get a sensible answer. Perhaps a clever one. But it can't feel the lift in your chest when you talk about the thing you secretly love. It can't notice that your shoulders drop when you mention one option and tighten at another. It doesn't know which parts of your week leave you buzzing and which leave you flat.

Those signals are where your answers live. Your energy, your joy and your own quiet voice are information no one else can hold for you. Not a friend, not a coach, and not a machine.

Your feelings are your gateway to your purpose. The lift, the heaviness, the quiet pull towards something: each one is pointing you somewhere.

I won't pretend it's always comfortable. When you first start listening, you may notice feelings you've kept yourself busy to avoid. Sadness, frustration, or a longing you haven't let yourself name. That can feel scary.

But trust me, once you start listening, you walk through those scary feelings and come out the other side. What's waiting there is a sense of peace, and a deeper connection with yourself than you may have felt in years.

I call the practice of reclaiming that voice Selfship: owning who you are and trusting your own voice, instead of shaping yourself to fit what others expect. When you practise it, alignment follows. And alignment shows up as confidence, clarity, joy and, often, prosperity.

How do you hear your own voice again after years of putting others first?

You don't need a retreat or a dramatic life change to begin. You need small, honest moments of checking in with yourself. Here's where I'd start.

  1. 1. Notice your energy before you think. Once a day, ask: What is giving me energy, and what is draining it? Don't analyse the answer. Just notice it. Your body often knows before your mind catches up.
  2. 2. Ask what joy would do. When you face a choice, even a small one, pause and ask: What would JOY do now? Not duty, not guilt, not what someone else would want. Joy. You may be surprised how clear the answer is.
  3. 3. Make one small choice that's yours. Each day, choose one thing purely because you want it. A walk. A different route home. Ten minutes with a paintbrush. Small choices rebuild trust with yourself.
  4. 4. Turn down the inner critic. When the voice says who do you think you are?, you don't have to argue. Just notice it, and ask what your wiser self would say instead.
  5. 5. Give it time. If you've spent years tuned to other people, your own voice may be faint at first. That's normal. Create space instead of rushing, and let your answers unfold.

Even the water dragon knows how to stop, sit in the sun and simply notice.

The first three steps are my daily Joy Check-In. It takes about a minute, and I do it myself every day. I've made it into a free card for your phone and your fridge, with a gentle daily reminder, so it's there when you need it.

If you do want to use AI along the way, try this: answer these questions yourself first, then share what you noticed. You'll get far more useful help, because you'll be bringing you to the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to use AI for personal guidance?

Yes. AI can be a helpful thinking partner for sorting your thoughts and exploring options. It works best when you bring your own feelings and observations to it, rather than asking it to decide for you. Use it as a companion, not a compass.

Why do I feel like I've lost myself after years of caring for others?

When you spend years tuned to other people's needs, your attention naturally moves away from your own. Over time, your own preferences and wants can grow quiet. Nothing is wrong with you. Your voice is still there, and it comes back with regular attention.

What is Selfship?

Selfship is a practice I created. It means owning who you are and trusting your own voice, instead of shaping yourself to fit what others expect. Practising Selfship leads to alignment, which shows up as confidence, clarity, joy and prosperity.

How long does it take to reconnect with yourself?

There's no set timeframe. Many women notice small shifts within a few weeks of checking in with themselves daily. The key is gentle consistency, a minute a day, rather than big changes all at once.

Where can you start today?

If you'd like a clearer picture of where you've lost touch with yourself, I've created a free assessment called Reclaim Your Energy. It takes a few minutes, and your result, the Reclaim Your Energy Map, shows you where your energy is going and where to begin.

The answers you're looking for aren't out there somewhere. They're in you, waiting for you to listen.

Not my way. Yours.
