Why Joy Requires Self-Understanding First

Shouldn't life be joyful?
I kept asking myself that question. For years, actually. Why does everything feel like such a slog? Why can't building a business feel lighter? Why can't there be more joy in the day-to-day of it?
I wasn't depressed. I wasn't failing. By most measures, I was doing well. But something felt fundamentally misaligned - and I couldn't quite name it.
Sound familiar?
The step most women skip entirely
Here's what I've observed over 20 years of working with women in business. Most of us go straight to Expanding.
We have an idea. We feel the passion. We follow someone else's formula for how to build it. And we work away at it - hard, consistently, determinedly. We invest in courses, in coaches, in strategies.
And somewhere along the way it stops feeling joyful. It starts feeling like a burden. Like obligation. Like a version of success that looks right from the outside and feels hollow from the inside.
The reason, almost every time, is that we skipped the Foundations work.
What the Foundations pillar actually means
My Joyful Living framework has three pillars: Foundations, Centring, and Expanding.
Expanding is where most women want to start - and understandably so. It's where the visible results are. The income, the clients, the growth, the life you can actually see.
But Expanding without Foundations is like trying to build a house on sand. It might hold for a while. But eventually the cracks appear.
Foundations is about one thing: self-understanding.
It's about knowing who you truly are - not the version you've been performing for everyone else, but your actual soul's blueprint. Why you're here. What you're genuinely designed for. What lights you up and what drains you.
It's about understanding how you're naturally wired to create and prosper - because not everyone is built to work the same way, and following someone else's model of success will always feel like wearing someone else's shoes.
And it's about having a clear enough picture of your own vision that you can actually move toward it - rather than toward what you think you should want.
The two lenses that changed everything for me
I've spent years working with tools that illuminate self-understanding. Two of them have been genuinely transformative - both for me personally and for the women I work with.
The first is astrology - not the sun-sign kind, but the deeply personalised kind that looks at every planet in alignment at the exact moment of your birth. I call this the Soul Alignment Chart, and what it reveals is astonishing. Not predictions - understanding. Why you feel certain things deeply. How you're designed to lead, create, and connect. What your natural timing looks like. Where your soul's purpose is pointing.
The second is Wealth Dynamics - a profiling tool I've used for nearly 17 years that identifies your natural path to creating wealth and prosperity in business. Once you know your profile, you stop trying to be brilliant at everything and start building on what you're actually brilliant at. You understand why some approaches energise you and others drain you dry.
When I put these two lenses together - alongside a personalised assessment of where you are across the three pillars of Joyful Living - something extraordinary happens. You see yourself clearly. All at once. And from that clarity, the path forward stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling obvious.
What this looks like in practice
This week I woke up feeling anxious. I didn't know why.
Instead of pushing through and getting on with my day, I opened my Joyful Clarity AI Guide - a private thinking partner seeded with all of my own information - and I asked: what is my soul trying to say right now? What is my astrology saying? What is my Wealth Dynamics saying? What does my Joyful Living path tell me about where I am?
The response was immediate and clear: stop creating things. Start sharing. People want to hear what you have to say.
It jolted me. Because creating more products is exactly what I default to when I'm anxious. But the moment I got clear on what was actually aligned for me right now, the anxiety lifted. I felt excited. I knew exactly what to do next.
That's what self-understanding does. It gives you a compass that's calibrated to you - not to a productivity system, not to someone else's version of success, but to who you actually are.
Where to start
If you recognise yourself in any of this - if Expanding has been feeling like pushing uphill, if you sense that something is misaligned but you can't quite name it, if you're ready to do the Foundations work properly - the From Crossroads to Joyful Clarity Report is where I'd suggest you begin.
It brings together four sources of insight - your Soul Alignment Chart, your Wealth Dynamics Profile, your Joyful Living Path results, and your own words in a Personal Clarity Form - into one handcrafted, personalised report delivered within three business days. With it comes your own Joyful Clarity AI Guide to use daily or weekly as your personal thinking partner.
This is not a template. It is not generic. It is yours.
If you're not ready for that yet, start with the free Joyful Living Path Assessment. It takes a few minutes and gives you a personalised picture of where your energy most needs support right now.
Because joy is not the reward at the end of all the hard work.
Joy is the path. And it starts with knowing who you are.
With warmth and joy,
Amali
